Nobody knows this little rose -
It might a pilgrim be,
Did I not take it from the ways,
And lift it up to thee.

Only a bee will miss it -
Only a butterfly -
Hastening from far journey
On its breast to lie –

Only a bird will wonder -
Only a breeze will sigh -
Ah! little rose, how easy
For such as thee to die.

Nobody Knows this Little Rose
Emily Dickinson

Nobody knows this little rose -
It might a pilgrim be,
Did I not take it from the ways,
And lift it up to thee.

Only a bee will miss it -
Only a butterfly -
Hastening from far journey
On its breast to lie –

Only a bird will wonder -
Only a breeze will sigh -
Ah! little rose, how easy
For such as thee to die.

A Poem by Emily Dickinson             Go Back
XXXII
Emily Dickinson

“HOPE is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I’ve heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.”
