per wiki:

Cass McCombs (born in 1977) is an American songwriter and performer. Called "unobtrusively brilliant" by John Peel,[3] he has received widespread critical acclaim for his five LPs and one EP.

McCombs was born in Concord, California. He has led a nomadic existence for most of his adult life, moving from one city to the next, living in cars, on couches and at campsites.

Cass McCombs spent time developing his songwriting abilities in New York City, until the events of 9/11 (coupled with running out of money) sent him back, via Greyhound bus, to San Francisco, where he recorded his debut E.P., entitled Not the Way E.P. It would be released by the small Baltimore-based Monitor Records in 2002.

After relocating there, his first full-length album, A, was released early the following year on Monitor in the U.S. and in Europe and the U.K. by 4AD. McCombs and his band spent much of 2003 and 2004 touring, performing everywhere from the All Tomorrow's Parties festival to house shows. McCombs otherwise divided his time amongst the Pacific Northwest, England and Baltimore. After a week of recording in Michigan, his second LP, PREfection, arrived in spring 2005.

Later that year, he decamped to Southern California to begin work on his third full-length, Dropping the Writ, which was released on October 9, 2007, by Domino Records and later named one of Amazon.com’s Best Albums of 2007.

Following a period in Chicago, he returned to California to record Catacombs before its eventual U.S. release on July 7, 2009. The album was named one of the top 50 albums of 2009 by Pitchfork Media.[6] His fifth LP, Wit's End, was released by Domino on April 26, 2011.

County Line

On my way to you, old county
hoping nothing's changed
that your pain is never-ending
that is, it's still the same
county line.
County line, county line

I left so far behind
You never even *tried* to love me
woah woah woah woah woah
what did I have to do to make you want me?
woah woah woah woah woah
I feel so blind I can't make out the passing road signs
woah woah woah woah woah
all that you would have me do is cross that county line
woah woah woah woah woah
County line.

Now you know I'm coming, old county
to see construction sites
and your new home's never ending
I think I can see the lights
county line, county line, county line.
I can smell the columbine

You never even *tried* to love me
woah woah woah woah woah
what did I have to do to make you want me?
woah woah woah woah woah
I feel so blind I can't make out the passing road signs
woah woah woah woah woah
all that you would have me do is cross that county line
woah woah woah woah woah
County line, woah woah woah woah woah.
County line, woah woah woah woah woah.
County line, woah woah woah woah woah.
County line, woah woah woah woah woah.

Cass McCombs: A Song For Every Time
by Will Butler

June 23, 2011

Cass McCombs' "County Line" would fit well sandwiched between Ricky Nelson and Bobby Darin, emanating from the radio of a 1957 Chevrolet. It could just as easily double as the slow-dance soundtrack for swaying teens at a 1980s high-school prom. But the song sounds contemporary, too, an example of how McCombs integrates the old with the new to stand handsomely alongside today's most celebrated songwriters.

Though his songs recall simpler times, McCombs' oeuvre doesn't rely on nostalgia. His fifth studio album, Wit's End, finds McCombs tapping into themes both personal and universal, delivering them poignantly with purposeful instrumentation and image-rich language. He pulls off saccharine like no other, too, making "oohs," "ahs," and "whoas" sound tasteful, testing his falsetto or singing nonchalantly about wildflowers.

At first listen, "County Line" may feel a bit lukewarm as it meanders like a hitchhiker kicking rocks at the side of the road. The tune reveals itself as deeply sad, though, and — like most of the work on Wit's End — plays out against a compellingly dark backdrop. McCombs takes great care with pain and loss, and confronts the most feared subjects with great tenderness.

Cass McCombs - Morning Shadows

Plodding morning shadows
blanket the cracks
along the patio
Droplets fall
into tiny pools
that brighten with
the white light of renewal
As one memory eludes me
another consumes me
A pane of glass
fogged by breath from nostrils
keeping me at bay
from a world less hostile
The world is so vain and uncertain
A death in the family and I'm in love again
New day
New day
New day
New day
Melting frost
on the juniper
Greyness evolves
into a spectrum of color

阿阳好.

Cass McCombs的歌大体是伤感的基调.
第一次听, 就被"County Line" 击中, 一听再听.

Cass McCombs - Meet Me Here At Dawn

The empty tank is US
Expired milk is US
This is a test of truss
Better meet me here at dawn
Hop the wooden fence
Run past the sleeping hens
If you had any sense
You'd meet me here at dawn
Find the memory erase it from your mind
just give it up
Our friends and family will all get left behind
Just give them up
I'm gone as light is shot
Whether you come or not
I think you know you ought
To meet me here at dawn
Find the memory confront it like a crime
Beat it up
Your clothes and precious things will all get left behind
Give them up
Forge the painful past
Let go of all you grasp
This is the last I'll ask
To meet me here at dawn
